Track 6: Bioprocess Engineering & Fermentation Technology
These Food events will also going to focus on the new trends and technologies in the fermentation technique. Technology for enhancing fermentation process is continually evolving and fermentation is used in a wide range of food and beverage applications. To make products useful to humans, industrial fermentation is the intentional use of fermentation by microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. Fermented products have applications as food as well as in general industry. Chemicals, such as acetic acid, citric acid, and ethanol are made by fermentation only. The rate of fermentation is directly proportional to the concentration of microorganisms, cells, cellular components, and enzymes as well as temperature, pH and for aerobic fermentation oxygen. Concentration of the dilute solution involves Product recovery. Genetically modified microbes produces enzymes such as lipase, invertase and rennet which are commercially used with fermentation process. Hopefully, the food Conferences related to fermentation will be helpful in explaining these facts. To provide exposure to technologies, government/institutional assistance, increase international tie-ups and to provide knowledge about recent trends in Food & beverages sector is the aim of organizing these type of food meetings.

Market research:
The food and drink industry is the largest manufacturing sector in the EU in terms of turnover, value added and employment. It is the second leading manufacturing sector in terms of number of company. Germany, France, Italy, UK and Spain are the largest EU food and drink producers. Every year, the EU food and drink industry export products worth around €65.3 billion.
Global Importance:
In developing countries, where agriculture dominates all other economic sectors, the majority of workers supporting the food and beverage industry cannot satisfy their immediate consumption needs and earn sufficient income to improve their lives. A handful of pioneering firms are breaking this dilemma and building economic opportunity around food and beverage value chains in ways that support future business growth.
1. Major food and beverage firms are concerned about maintaining access to quality ingredients. Global consumers are increasingly willing to pay premiums for safe, organic, and sustainable products. In this equation lies the opportunity for large companies to anticipate the needs of consumers, improve lives, and mitigate their environmental footprints.
2. Pioneering food and beverage firms are partnering with non-profits and public institutions to expand economic opportunities in developing countries at three levels: creating business models that involve the poor as entrepreneurs, suppliers, retailers, customers; building the poor's human and physical capital to enable them to participate in these models; and tackling institutional and policy barriers to enhance feasibility and impact.
3.These companies are applying five best practice ingredients in their interventions: collaborating across sectors to raise awareness of opportunities; leveraging “patient capital” funding when competitive returns are not immediately available; planning with economic and environmental sustainability in mind; balancing globally and locally focused approaches to economic opportunity creation; and designing for scale and replication to increase impact.
Global Market Size:
The global food and beverage retail industry has witnessed significant growth over the last five years and is expected to continue its growth momentum, reaching approximately US $5,776 billion in 2017 with a CAGR of 5% over the next five years. Macroeconomic factors such as burgeoning GDP, increasing consumer spending and changing lifestyle, taste, and preferences are expected to drive the industry over the forecast period.
The roughly 4.5 billion low-income people in developing countries collectively spend more than $5 trillion a year. Indeed, the lower consumption segments spend more than the middle and higher consumption segments combined. They spend $2.3 trillion a year on food and beverages alone.
Why Netherlands ??
The Netherlands became the second exporter of agricultural and food products of the world because of its knowledge based approach and the linkage thereof to education and extension and policy development. Netherlands also known as the Golden Triangle for agricultural development. The Netherlands considers agriculture to be at the heart of sustainable development. Agriculture is in the centre of poverty reduction and ensuring food security.
The Dutch agri-food cluster occupies a strong position on the international markets and produces a wide range of high-quality products. The agri-food complex covers all economic activities in production, processing and distribution of agricultural products (food and non-food) of domestic and foreign origin. It is of major importance to the national economy. It represents a gross added value of approximately 10% of the GDP. Agriculture in the Netherlands operates essentially as a mainstream economic sector.
Agriculture is crucial for the sustainable use of our natural resources and the Netherland considers both agriculture and the agricultural sector as vital in addressing the food crisis, the energy crisis, poverty and hunger, climate change, food safety and public health and in realizing a bio-based economy. These issues of food security are central to the research, education and international outreach activities of Wageningen UR (University and Research Centre). Wageningen UR is one of the worlds leading knowledge institutions on life sciences, and food systems. It combines fundamental, strategic and applied research activities within an interdisciplinary framework focused on linking technological and institutional innovation.
The turnover of the Dutch food retail industry in 2014 totaled € 33.3 billion. For 2015, turnover is expected to increase by 2.5 percent. The retail market is fairly consolidated with a market share of almost 60 percent for the top 3 food retailers. Sustainable food (including organic products) is one of the most important growth markets in food retail. The market share for private label products and also for convenient, healthy and innovative products continues to be strong.
The Netherlands is a center of the food formulating world. The Dutch government puts a high value on developing nutritious foods, as the country recognizes the impact that a poor diet has on health, and, as a consequence, public health care. In addition, the Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality aims to promote innovations in the food supply chain that will lead to healthier products. There are many public and private institutes and programs available to assist the Dutch agri-food business, but also international agri-food companies, in the development, research and testing of innovative, new food ingredients and food products. The aim is to not only develop foods that are better for you, but that also taste great.
In 2014, the turnover of the Dutch food retail industry totaled € 33.3 billion, similar to the turnover in 2013. For 2015, turnover is expected to increase by 2.5 percent due to the improving economy in the Netherlands and greater confidence in the economy among consumers.

Last year, the Netherlands imported USD 31.7 billion of consumer-oriented products, about a third came from neighboring Germany and Belgium. After Brazil, the U.S. is the second largest non-EU supplier of consumer-oriented products. Over 2014, U.S. exports totaled USD 1.1 billion, dominated by food preparations, tree nuts, wine and beef. U.S. exports of consumer oriented products grew by almost 60 percent over the last 5 years.

Projection: Growth of Food & Beverages sector for upcoming years:
Meat consumption worldwide has doubled in the last 20 years, and it is expected to double again by 2050.
The global food and beverage industry is growing at 3.5% a year and is expected to be worth more than US$7 trillion by 2016.
Foods and beverages that offer validated health claims account for around US$25 billion of global sales, mainly in the key markets of Japan, the USA and Europe. Levels of food and drink waste by commercial and industrial businesses in the food sector were almost halved down 49%.
The food sector (excluding agriculture) is showing resilience to the economic downturn with an increase of 6.3%. There was a rise of 7.4% in food wholesaling, 4.7% in food manufacturing and 14.6% in non-residential catering. Food retailing changed little at 0.4%.
Longer term, the food sector (excluding agriculture) increased by 48% between while the whole economy increased by 61%. The food sector has less scope for growth as there is a limit to consumer intake capacity and therefore it relies largely on quality improvements.
Conclusion:
The food and drink industry and all its sub-sectors have a good international trade position with all sectors demonstrating improvement over the past years, despite weakening labour productivity and value added. This development can largely be attributed to the global perception of the high quality of European products and increasing incomes driving higher consumer demand for food and drinks products in emerging countries. The conclusion of a series of free trade agreements with non-EU countries in the last years has also contributed to increased market opportunities.
With Government policy targeted at more primary production converting towards organic methods, it is expected that domestic production will continue to grow during the forthcoming years. Based on the documents reviewed and interviews with key players in the trade and sales sectors of organic products, it seems valid to conclude that it is more likely that the Netherlands, a major agricultural exporter, will also become a major exporter of organic vegetables, especially for temperate zone products (mostly vegetables) and greenhouses products (peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers).
